A Step in the Right Direction: Commending Progress in Africa’s Anti-Corruption Efforts.

In a remarkable development, no African country has made the top 10 list of the most corrupt nations in the latest corruption index ranking. “This significant achievement stands as a testament to the relentless efforts of civil society organizations, government ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), as well as the active engagement of citizens advocating for transparency and accountability across the continent,” Daisi Omokungbe, our executive director said.

Last week, Hamzat Lawal, CEO of Connected Development, aptly remarked, “I think what’s important is… As a society, we are doing well… We are rolling back and hopefully, we can sustain it and do much better.” At PROMAD, we wholeheartedly echo this sentiment as we celebrate this pivotal milestone in the fight against corruption.

PROMAD remains committed to empowering both state and non-state actors through evidence-based strategies and advocacy to promote accountability, participatory governance, and sustainable development. We commend the ongoing efforts of civil society organizations and relevant government MDAs in Nigeria, including; The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Finance and others.

Their unwavering dedication to advancing transparency and accountability has yielded tangible results, demonstrating that collaboration between civil societies and governments can enhance the effectiveness of public service delivery.

We also recognize the commitment of key government MDAs to the anti-corruption agenda. The progress witnessed thus far underscores the effectiveness of their initiatives, and we encourage them to maintain this momentum in the fight against corruption.

While we celebrate this achievement, we acknowledge that the journey continues. We urge our partners both governmental and civil society representatives and the general public to join hands in this ongoing battle against corruption. Together, we must amplify the calls for transparency, accountability, and an improved Nigeria for all citizens.

A better Nigeria is indeed possible. Let us move forward cohesively, with our heads held high and our shoulders squared in the fight against corruption.
