Job Overview
The Business Development Manager will lead PROMAD Infotech Foundation’s efforts to establish and grow our innovation not-for-profit company, driving grants and revenue generation, strategic partnerships, and partnership engagements. This role will support the implementation of the Organisational Strategy 2025-2030 by securing grants, developing sustainable business models, and positioning PROMAD as a leader in civic tech and social impact solutions. The manager will oversee grant and proposal writing, sales management, partner and donor engagement, and client management to blend financial sustainability and programmatic impact.
Job Description
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to grow PROMAD’s business unit and Innovation Labs, securing funding through grants and commercial opportunities, and building strong relationships with partners and clients. The role requires a blend of strategic vision, business acumen, leadership and a deep commitment to balancing PROMAD’s mission and the Innovation Labs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Business Unit Development:
- Develop and implement a business model for PROMAD’s business unit and innovation arm, focusing on revenue-generating services such as hub, consultancy, training, and civic tech solutions development.
- Identify and pursue grants and commercial opportunities, including contracts with multilateral agencies, NGOs, private sector partners, and international organisations.
- Oversee sales management, including pricing strategies, client acquisition, and contract negotiations.
- CivicTech, AI and Data Analytics Leadership:
- Lead the establishment and growth of the CivicTech, AI and Data Academy, designing programmes to train individuals and organisations in civic tech, artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, monitoring and evaluation, organisational development and policy innovation.
- Develop partnerships with educational institutions, banks, tech companies, government and development agencies to enhance the Academy’s offerings and reach.
- Manage the Academy’s operations, including curriculum development, marketing, participant recruitment, and programme evaluation.
- Grant and Proposal Writing:
- Identify and pursue grant opportunities from donors, foundations, and international organisations aligned with PROMAD’s focus areas.
- Lead and work with other departments to write high-quality proposals, concept notes, and budgets to secure funding for PROMAD’s programmes, the Innovation Labs and the Academy.
- Maintain a pipeline of funding opportunities and ensure timely submission of applications.
- Partner Engagement:
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, private sector entities, and international development organisations.
- Represent PROMAD at networking events, conferences, and stakeholder meetings to promote Innovation Labs and the Academy.
- Negotiate partnership agreements to support collaborative projects, co-funding, or resource sharing.
- Client Management:
- Manage relationships with clients, ensuring high satisfaction and repeat business for PROMAD’s services (e.g., consultancy, training, tech solutions).
- Develop client proposals, deliver presentations, and oversee service delivery to meet client expectations.
- Implement feedback mechanisms to improve client experiences and refine service offerings.
- Financial and Strategic Planning:
- Contribute to PROMAD’s financial sustainability by meeting grants and revenue targets for the Innovation Labs and the Academy.
- Collaborate with the Founder and Executive Director, and other departments to align business development strategies with the Organisational Strategy 2025-2030.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activities, and emerging opportunities in civic tech and social impact to inform strategic decisions.
- Team Leadership and Capacity Building:
- Supervise and mentor BDD team members, fostering a culture of innovation, excellence and accountability.
- Train staff and partners on best practices for business development, grant writing, and client management.
- Ensure effective collaboration with other departments, including the Office of the Founder and Executive Director (OFED), Impact and Communications Department (ICD), Research, Analytics and Insights Department (RAID), and Programmes and Partnerships Department (PPD), etc.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, International Development, Economics, Engineering, Accounting or a related field. A Master’s degree or MBA is preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in business development, fundraising, or sales management, preferably in the non-profit, development, or tech sector.
- Proven track record of securing grants and contracts from donors, multilateral agencies, or private sector clients.
- Experience in programme management, partnership development, or client relations in a development and tech-focused context.
- Familiarity with civic tech, education, or social impact initiatives is a strong advantage.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong business acumen with the ability to develop and execute revenue-generating strategies.
- Excellent grant and proposal writing skills, with experience crafting compelling narratives and budgets.
- Proficiency in sales management, including client acquisition, negotiation, and contract management.
- Exceptional networking and relationship-building skills to engage diverse stakeholders.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and capitalise on market opportunities.
- Familiarity with the business side of civic tech tools, AI, data analytics, or digital solutions for social and economic impact.

- Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal.

- Experience with financial forecasting or budgeting is a plus.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
The performance of the Business Development Manager will be evaluated based on the following KPIs, aligned with the organisational strategy of PROMAD and its innovation company:
- Revenue Generation:
- Total revenue generated through grants, contracts, and commercial services for the Innovation Labs and the Academy (Target: ₦250 million annually with a 30% increase in year 2).
- Number of new revenue streams established (Target: At least 4 new streams per year, e.g., consultancy, training fees).
- Grant and Proposal Success:
- Number of grant proposals submitted annually (Target: At least 20 high-quality proposals).
- Success rate of grant applications (Target: Secure at least 50% of submitted proposals).
- Total grant funding secured (Target: ₦150 million annually with a 30% increase in year 2).
- The Academy Growth:
- Number of participants enrolled in the Innovation Labs and Academy programmes (Target: At least 400 paid participants annually).
- Number of partnerships established for the Academy (Target: At least 4 strategic partnerships per year).
- Participant satisfaction with Innovation Labs and Academy programmes (Target: 85% positive feedback).
- Partnership Development:
- Number of new strategic partnerships secured (Target: At least 5 partnerships annually with government, private sector, or NGOs).
- Number of collaborative projects or co-funded initiatives launched (Target: At least 4 per year).
- Client Management:
- Number of new clients acquired for the Innovation Labs (Target: At least 5 big new clients annually).
- Client retention rate (Target: 80% of clients renewing contracts or engaging in repeat business).
- Client satisfaction scores (Target: 90% positive feedback via surveys or testimonials).
- Strategic and Operational Efficiency:
- Percentage of business development projects completed on time and within budget (Target: 90% on-time delivery).
- Development and implementation of a 3-year business plan for Innovation Labs and the Academy (Target: Plan finalised by Q3 2025).

- Number of training sessions conducted for BDD staff or other departments on business development or client management (Target: At least 2 sessions per year).
- Positive feedback from team members on leadership and mentorship (Target: 80% positive feedback).

- Brand and Market Positioning:
- Increased visibility of PROMAD, the Innovation Labs and the Academy through events, media, or campaigns (Target: Participation in at least 4 high-profile events annually).
- Growth in stakeholder awareness of PROMAD and Innovation Labs’ services (Target: 20% increase in inquiries or referrals year-on-year).
Salary Range
- The monthly salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications as obtainable in the nonprofit, development and innovation sectors.
